In the lecture “Strategic Actions and Top Management Dynamics in Corporate Turnaround” (2023), Professor Chanchai Tangpong provides insights into his research on corporate crises and successful turnaround processes. At the centre of the analysis is the question of why some companies manage to return to a path of success after an existential crisis, while others fail.
The lecture demonstrates that success depends not only on the choice of strategic actions, but above all on their timing. Early focus, reduction of complexity and targeted restructuring can support turnaround efforts, whereas delayed or overly hasty interventions tend to create additional risks. Changes in top management also generate positive effects only when they are carefully prepared and accompanied by stable support structures.
These insights offer important implications for family businesses, particularly in the context of succession, transformation and leadership under conditions of high uncertainty. Professor Tangpong emphasises that successful renewal is not achieved through rapid change alone, but through thoughtful sequencing, clear allocation of responsibilities, and a conscious balance between tension, stability and change.
