The image of advisory boards has changed significantly in the past years. “Today advisory boards are more a kind of ‘sparring partner’ on equal terms who are invited by companies’ bosses to voice their opinion blatantly and to participate in decision-making processes on future strategic orientations of the enterprise. Advisory board members are frequently as powerful as regular supervisory board members of listed enterprises.

“The belief that advisory boards are merely accessories is outdated for SMEs,” says Tom Rüsen. “Those who have to make significant strategic decisions on a professional level, seek more and more advice from qualified external consultants who can stand up against the owner of an enterprise.
