In the article „Die Rolle der Ehe- und Lebenspartner in Unternehmerfamilien – Warum eine systematische Definition und Integration von Partnerschaft im Rahmen der Familienstrategie zunehmend wichtiger wird“ (FuS 5/2025) by Tom A. Rüsen, Magdalena Wendt and Anne K. Heider, the central role of spouses and life partners in business families is examined. In a complex and pluralised society, the governance of these relationships is considered crucial to the long-term success of family businesses. The article sheds light on how emotional and cultural aspects of partnerships can be integrated into the strategic planning of business families.
The authors draw on qualitative data from the analysis of 39 family constitutions to capture the expectations and roles of spouses and life partners. It becomes clear that a clear definition and integration of these partners can not only reduce family tensions, but also ensure the stability and performance of the business. The study shows that many entrepreneurial families implement formal regulations to strategically manage the integration of partners.
The results illustrate that the conscious examination of the roles of spouses and life partners represents a central prerequisite for the cohesion and continuation of business families. The authors call for governance structures to be reconsidered and for the emotional support provided by partners to be recognised as a valuable contribution to business management.
