The WIFU Foundation was established in 2009 with the purpose of promoting education, science, research and training in the field of family entrepreneurship. A focus of this promotion is supporting the work of the Witten Institute for Family Business (WIFU) and the Economics Faculty at the Witten/Herdecke University. The funding needed for this is given to the WIFU Foundation mainly by a group of around 75 family businesses. Another focus of the Foundation’s work is to publish and disseminate the knowledge it acquires about family businesses and business families.
FACTS, DETAILS & FIGURES
GROUP OF INSTITUTE SPONSORS
Most of WIFU’s sponsors have been supporting the WIFU Foundation’s work for many years. A trusted group of 75 family businesses from the German speaking world (Germany, Switzerland and Austria) has grown up over the years. This established trust allows us to discuss difficult issues – such as succession arrangements, family strategies, conflicts and crises – together in a protected space. This creates a practical exchange between WIFU researchers and WIFU sponsors, which is certainly unique in family business research in this form, intensity and breadth.

COLLABORATING CLOSELY WITH WIFU, THIS GROUP OF FAMILY ENTREPRENEURS HAS DEVELOPED INTO A DISCUSSION FORUM IN WHICH ITS PARTICIPANTS’ PROBLEMS CAN BE ADDRESSED CONFIDENTIALLY AND COMPETENTLY. THIS ALLOWS US TO LEARN FROM THE EXPERIENCE AND EXAMPLES OF OUR ENTREPRENEURIAL COLLEAGUES – AT WHAT MUST BE A UNIQUE INSTITUTION IN GERMANY.
The WIFU Network is based on honest and open communication, and treating received information confidentially.
The WIFU Network needs the active involvement of its members. That is the only way to keep our finger on the pulse.
The WIFU Network provides a protective space in which experiences and issues can be shared: Confidentiality within – discretion without.
Dealing with differences
The WIFU Network is based on treating each other with respect, and assumes an interest in different models and solutions. Discussions are held in an appreciative and professional atmosphere.
The WIFU Network is a place that focuses on acquiring and sharing knowledge. This means that Network members agree not to enter into discussions about new business.
The WIFU Network offers an equal exchange between researchers and members of family businesses and business families. On the basis of this principle, consultants, representatives of banks and the press are not allowed into the closed Network events.
