Professor von Schlippe is a qualified psychologist, (Hamburg University 1976), psychological psychotherapist, family therapist and family psychologist. He gained his PhD at Osnabrück University (1986) and habilitated there in psychotherapy and clinical psychology (2001).
His career began with a five year spell directing wards at two child and youth psychiatric clinics. In 1981 he moved to Osnabrück University, where he taught and researched in psychotherapy and clinical psychology until 2005. He was an assistant professor in clinical psychology at Jena University from 2003 to 2004. He has held an additional position as a teaching therapist and teaching supervisor at the Institut für Familientherapie Weinheim e.V. since 1986. He was the Chairman of the Systemic Society, Berlin from 1999 to 2005. As an acknowledged expert in family psychology, he was appointed to the Department of Leadership and Dynamics in Family Businesses at the Witten Institute for Family Business (WIFU), Witten/Herdecke University in 2005.
