Family Business Almanac

Until today there is no comprehensive reference work available about big family enterprises that have rendered over three or more generations extraordinary economic and social performance. The book with the title “Große Unternehmerfamilien” [Large entrepreneurial families] deals therefore with portraits of 50 huge family enterprises that are at least 100 years old. The book focuses on the development of the enterprise as well as on the entrepreneurial family and the associates. The part of the book dealing with the company’s history describes the founding and the corporate development until today. Furthermore, aspects of corporate strategy, major corporate principles and core competences are of importance. The second part of the portraits presents each entrepreneurial family. In this part personal information or even gossip are not as relevant as questions of family history, family strategy and family governance. Also, specific succession regulations as well as particularities of the corporate management are outlined. Overall this part deals mainly with the principles of success on side of the entrepreneur and the associates.
The project has been initiated and supported by a circle around the entrepreneur Martin Schoeller as well as by the professors Brun-Hagen Hennerkes (Stiftung Familienunternehmen) and Arist von Schlippe (WIFU).
The project has meanwhile been terminated. In October 2011 the book was published at Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht:
Plate, M., Groth, T., Ackermann, V. & Schlippe, A. v. (2011). Große deutsche Familienunternehmen. Göttingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht.
